Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G Review: Design

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G that visited our editorial staff is the Phantom Black, the variant that Samsung has so favored. When we see it firsthand, we understand why this South Korean vendor is so superior. So, even though it's only wrapped in black, Samsung is able to present a premium and charming impression. Using it for a long time does not make it look boring to look at.

In addition, the black color slightly disguises the bulge on the rear camera which is somewhat thick. But what's interesting is the camera 'house' is made together with the body frame. Samsung calls it the Contour Cut design. Nobody has adopted this before, because it provides a refresher on the design of the Galaxy S Series.

Other changes that will be found in the coating on the back of this phone. Samsung is no longer wrapping the back of the Galaxy S21 Ultra with a glossy finish. Now replace it with a matte finish that feels smooth on the hands and is smudge-free.

Even though the Phantom Black's appearance is very attractive, we Smartphone Evolution recommends installing a case. Because when in your hand, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a little slippery. In addition, there are other reasons that will be presented in the camera review.

The dimensions of the Galaxy S21 Ultra are indeed large, but the width of 75.6 mm keeps this phone comfortable in our hands. But those with tiny hands might have a hard time grasping them.

The weight of this cellphone is also quite heavy. Even the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra which was released in mid-2020 lost. For buttons and ports, still place the power and volume buttons on the right side of the body. There are two microphone holes at the top.

The left side of the phone has absolutely no buttons or ports. While at the bottom, we can find the USB-C port, speakers, and the SIM Card tray. The front and back of the Galaxy S21 Ultra are protected by the latest Gorilla Glass Victus. Apart from that, it has IP68 water and dust resistance features like other premium Samsung devices.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G Review: Display

Samsung's premium smartphone screens have never been a disappointment so far, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is no exception. The colors that are presented are so amazing to the eye, they are still clearly visible when used in the hot sun. It still uses a 2X Dynamic AMOLED panel, but this phone supports a 120Hz refresh rate at QHD + resolution. So you no longer need to worry about choosing a high resolution or high refresh rate.

Interestingly, Samsung applies an adaptive refresh rate from 10 Hz to 120Hz depending on the content being opened. The benefit is to make the battery more efficient.

Samsung makes the edges of the Galaxy S21 Ultra screen slightly curved. Provides a seamless feel without compromising comfort when the edges touch the palms.

This phone carries on-screen fingerprint support which is as fast as its predecessor. Can make it easier for users to open their cellphones even though they are wearing a mask. Unlike when applying face recognition, users are forced to remove the mask for a moment to scan the face.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G Review: Performance

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is powered by the Exynos 2100 and 12 GB of RAM. When it was announced, Samsung boasted that this new chip brought a significant increase compared to its predecessor because it used 5nm fabrication. Indeed, the test results have increased from the Exynos 990 which powers the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Unfortunately the test score did not reach the expectation because it was too high.

We had time to do three benchmark tests for Antutu with three scenarios. First, with the screen setting in Full HD +, airplane mode and the adaptive battery feature are disabled. The result reached 637797.

The second scenario with the QHD + setting, the airplane mode with the adaptive battery feature disabled, the score is 627699. Finally, with the Full HD + setting, airplane mode, the adaptive battery feature is deactivated and put in the refrigerator, it scores 658,345.

Meanwhile, the Antutu Exynos 990 on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which we tested a few months ago, scored 520,214. Continues on Geekbench test and PC Mark Work 2.0. The results are also above the Exynos 990, with the exception of single-core test scores.

But keep in mind that the benchmark value is not a real picture when using a device. While using it for mutlitasking, the performance of the Galaxy S21 Ultra is so smooth. We does not feel excess heat like when using the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra playing the COD Mobile game.

Battery

For the battery, with a capacity of 5,000 mAh it can last up to a full day for standard use with a QHD + 120Hz resolution screen. Unfortunately, fast charging is still 25W, so it takes about 65-70 minutes to fully charge this cellphone.

S Pen

For the first time, Samsung has provided S Pen support on the Galaxy S Series. It's just that Samsung sells it separately. The presence of the S Pen on the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is not just for doodling or coloring. Together with the Samsung Note, this digital stylus can boost productivity. All handwriting can be tidied up instantly. You can also convert it to text so that it is easy to share with others.

Samsung Notes has an Audio Bookmark feature. So while you take notes you can also record the conversation or the meeting. Later you can repeat the recording by pointing the S Pen at certain words, making it easier if you miss something. Through Samsung Notes we can edit PDF files. In fact, users can directly import PDF files and can convert notes or images to PDF, PPT, or Word formats.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G Review: Camera

The most favored sector of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is the camera. Because the increase is not only in terms of hardware, Samsung also provides many features to this new hero. Embedded within the new ISOCELL HM3 108MP sensor brings improvements to focus and performance in low light conditions. There is an ultra-wide camera measuring 12 MP. Instead of using one telephoto camera, the Galaxy S21 Ultra packs two that are both 10MP in size. Each camera offers 3X and 10x optical zoom, Galaxy S21 Ultra shots are satisfying in various conditions.

When using the 108 MP camera at night. The crop results are still visible in detail even though there is noise.

Zoom

The presence of the zoom lock feature helps lock objects when using 100x zoom space. So that the shots are clearer even though they are taken from such a great distance.

Video Performance

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra brings many features, one of which is Director's View. Through this feature, you can see various angles on one screen. So before or when taking a picture, users can choose the best angle, from a Wide-angle, Ultra-Wide or Telephoto camera. Not only that, when recording video, users can still change angles.

Inside this Director's View there is a Vlogger View. This feature allows users to turn on the front and rear cameras simultaneously. When using the camera intensively makes the area around the camera quite hot. Even so, it does not reduce camera performance. In order to stay comfortable when shooting, it's good to wrap the Galaxy S21 Ultra's body with a case.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is Samsung's best mobile offering in early 2021. Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G priced at $1199.99. Bringing the most powerful specifications wrapped in the latest features. There is almost no shortage of this phone. The absence of a charger and eraphone is very unfortunate.

Likewise, the fast charging feature is still 25W, even though other Android vendors are competing to present faster technology. Hopefully in the future Samsung will improve its capabilities so that refills can be even shorter. Apart from that, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra provides a complete package for work, content creation and entertainment in one device.
