Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G Review Manual Guide

If there is a saying "in the sky there is still the sky", this year, above the Plus series there is still the Ultra series. Somewhat disconnected huh? I don't know, that's all that crossed my mind to describe the naming of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, the best smartphone from Samsung to start in 2020. Samsung decided to eliminate the "e" series and improve "Ultra" like the top-of-the-line line of Galaxy S series this year.

Samsung is targeting the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G for those who want to do more with their smartphones. This smartphone can record video up to 8K resolution, with a maximum image resolution of 108MP, and the name "5G" appendage behind it.

Design

When switching daily drivers from Xiaomi Mi Note 10 to Galaxy S20 Ultra, it feels like something is wrong. Using a smartphone with a price almost 3 times more expensive, it's certainly normal if I set expectations if the Galaxy S20 Ultra has a better design. Apparently not anyway.

Okay, regarding the design is something that can be considered subjective. The body of the Galaxy S20 Ultra seems decisive, some people might want to say the design is stiff, with a camera bump that does not bear on the back. When held, this smartphone feels strong and steady. Understandably, it just weighs 229 gr. Indeed, the Galaxy S20 Ultra insists I want to use the Lumia Windows Phone 6 inches long ago, which at that time was said "phablet".

Some people I share opportunities to hold this smartphone like the rigid design, and its large dimensions, especially if the size of the hand is like that. The back camera section that looks big with the words "100x Zoom Room" is easily visible when we use it to make phone calls, for example. I also have big hands, but there are some things that make it less safe when holding this smartphone.

Using Gorilla Glass 6 glass material, the S20 Ultra feels very slippery. If the surface of the hands is easily wet like mine, it's over. There is a sense of caution almost every time, most importantly again use one hand. For example when you are lying down while holding a smartphone, the risk of falling tucked into a pretty big face (don't copy it, yeah). Samsung also does not share the arrangement of anti-fingerprint on the body. The Cosmic Black complexion that I tested easily looked dirty. My advice, selection of other variants of style if you do not want to look dirty every time.

Other parts there are no problems. The transition frame and the front and back feel smooth in the hand, the buttons are safe even though they should be more precise. Samsung also decided to reduce the curved side of the front screen panel. It still exists and is still visible, but it is made of subtle so it does not disturb the experience when using it.

Samsung also still uses an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor inside the Galaxy S20 Ultra screen. It seems there is no comparison of the previous generation, relatively longer than optical sensors that emit bright rays, even though it has been reliable aka a little wrong detection. The face unlock is also not the fastest, far compared to relatives of BBK Electronics such as Oppo and realm.

Screen

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has the best screen of all smartphones that I had tried. The dimensions are very large, 6, 9 inches Dynamic AMOLED 2X with an aspect ratio of 20: 9 and 511ppi pixel density. Don't you imagine because it's almost 7 inches, the dimensions are as big as a tablet. The screen is slim, plus the bezels around it are very thin, even though the basic bezel is listed.

Samsung also features a large refresh rate, 120Hz with a 240Hz touch sampling rate. This feature makes the movement of content contained on the Galaxy S20 Ultra screen look very soft. Unfortunately this feature does not track in Quad HD resolution, aka you must lower the resolution to full HD.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra screen is also very bright when used outdoors, approaching 900 nits when needed. For the reproduction of style, there is no doubt. Despite using the "Vivid" fashion, Samsung can balance certain tone tones to keep it in balance. The application logo on the menu is patterned, but when used to watch television series, the complexion is still quite natural. Natural tone options with the sRGB standard are also provided. You can also enjoy HDR content directly from this smartphone.

It could be that some of you Galaxy S20 Ultra users who are quite meticulous want to look at a little green tint when used in a black state with low brightness. I myself understand, given the matter of a kind of universal green purple tint found on the AMOLED panel. But when I find out more, Samsung announces that this is an application bug that causes screen calibration, and wants to be fixed in the next update.

Galaxy S20 Ultra 100x Zoom Camera

It shifts the "100x Zoom Room" camera section of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. This smartphone ‘only’ has 4 camera sensors on the back. The main sensor has a resolution of 108MP f / 1.8 with a size of 1/1.33 inches, 0.8um pixel size, focal length 26mm, PDAF, OIS and OIS. This sensor can be used to take full resolution images, or 12MP with non-binning technology. Unlike the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 which produces 27MP images, Samsung decided to produce 12MP resolution images with larger pixel dimensions of people, reaching 2. 4um. The benefits to be gained from this non-binning are the results of brighter images in low-light conditions, noise reduction plus better HDR expertise.

On it is a 12MP f / 2.2 ultra wide-angle camera sensor with a large pixel dimension of 1. 4um, which unfortunately is not yet equipped with autofocus. Whereas in the very basic sequence is a 48MP f / 3. telephoto sensor using a periscope lens. The dimensions are quite large at 1/2 inch, equipped with PDAF and OIS. While at the bottom of the flash there is a ToF sensor for bokeh impact.

The appearance of the camera application interface is quite easy to understand, even though there is a lot of fashion that can be used. Not only fashion images, videos and other hidden fashion such as panoramas, night fashion to pro video, Samsung presents a new feature called "Single Take", located on the left of picture fashion. Samsung prioritizes AI expertise in this fashion. Press the shutter button, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra wants to capture the moment for 10 seconds using a variety of cameras available. The conclusion was a short video, a video of the Boomerang impact, images with various effects up to time lapse.

Meanwhile, for accessing the three cameras, you can press 3 buttons located above the fashion image. Very left for ultra-wide, middle using a 108MP sensor, and right for periscope cameras. When one of them is pressed, the option to zoom from 30- 100x can be selected, or you can move it to reach the zoom level according to taste. When you use remote zoom, Samsung shares the focus peaking feature of a reliable DSLR camera, making it easy for you to center the camera to your will.

For the state of abundant light, surely there are no complaints. Both ultra-wide, wide or telephoto cameras can produce images with great detail, and suitable reproduction of features. Samsung continues to improve the accuracy of its flagship smartphone's white balance, from what was previously known to be warmer or warmer, now it continues to be near neutral or accurate. For me, the zoom feature is still very usable for 5x to 10x magnification. If it's been 30x, the afternoon has started to look rather blurry. Meanwhile, to use the 100x zoom feature, objects must be really far away to be able to focus. The process of focusing also tends to be long or sometimes difficult, especially if the hands are not very normal.

When at night, the Galaxy S20 Ultra can also take pictures with a relatively light shutter. But what I noticed, the tendency to reduce noise is still visible. The picture appears a little smoother for the sake of slight noise, even though the pattern reproduction is still maintained. The use of telephoto sensors when night conditions must also be avoided, most importantly for enlargement of more than 5x. But calm, Samsung provides a pretty helpful night fashion.

If the Galaxy S10 is not equipped with the default night fashion (which afterwards arrived via an application update), the Galaxy S20 Ultra has been equipped with night fashion and is compatible for all three main camera sensors. When I test it in an outdoor environment at night, when using the main sensor, it would appear characteristic if the camera was going to take pictures for 4 seconds.

In the same situation, the other 2 cameras need 8 seconds. Data that is simple and informative, not like Google Pixels that have to guess the camera is going to take pictures for how long. And when a successful picture is taken, you can immediately take another picture without having to wait for the drawing process to end. Also the process is pretty fast intertwined thanks to the use of a fast chipset.

Another issue with large sensors, the same as Mi Note 10, is a small focus range especially when photographing objects at close range. And what I lacked was the bokeh impact produced by Live Focus fashion. When used for photographing objects such as cell phones and fine dining, it's not often that I'm more satisfied with the background blur effects generated by the Pixel 3 I, purely using an application without the push of the ToF sensor.

For video recording, the Galaxy S20 Ultra can record up to 4K 60fps especially 8K 24fps. With the situation at this time where the internet network flash does not exist as a whole, plus an average TV and laptop screens that are still more universal at full HD resolution, I think this feature only fits like a bonus. Remarkably Steady does not exist in this fashion, so it could be just appropriate for recording using a tripod, in a state of abundant light for cropping needs.

Whereas at 30fps recording, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra video can be equipped with auto HDR plus focus tracking. When the video is enlarged, the audio also wants to explore the zoom level automatically. Transition or switching between cameras throughout the recording also feels pretty smooth, approaching the iPhone 11 series.

The front camera 40MP f / 2.2 on the S20 Ultra is equipped with PDAF, and uses quad-binning technology to produce 10MP images. Compared to previous generations, it has been far better in terms of sharpness or facial details. Although not the best for the flagship class. The front camera is also equipped with night fashion, EIS and can record video up to 4K 60fps.

Features

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has used the One UI 2. 1 interface based on Android 10. The security patch has also been the latest at this time, Samsung is no less active for updating the security of its flagship smartphone. For me, One UI is a very mature interface and easy to use. Although the screen is large, almost all buttons can be achieved with one hand thanks to the placement of the instant.

Its features are also useful, except for Bixby, which is not as optimal as Google Assistant. When I first used this smartphone, I was indecisive because holding the power button instead caused Bixby, instead of showing the option to turn off the energy. In fact I have to change it through the Settings menu. Options for double press and press and hold can be adjusted at will. It's just that I'm rather sorry, Bixby is the option selected by default, so it's a bit confusing in the early hours. Other features such as the built-in screen recorder and Edge shortcut also exist. Multitasking is also very easy thanks to the bonus pop-up view option, not just split screen.

Performance

The unit we tested was a formal variant with the Exynos 990 chipset from Samsung. For other states like the United States, the Samsung Galaxy S20 series is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 micro chipset. Many regretted Samsung's decision to launch a smartphone with 2 different chipset variants, because it could affect various sides of usage such as battery life, especially the camera.

Samsung Exynos 990 has an octa-core CPU architecture (2 × 2. 73 GHz Mongoose M5 2 × 2. 50 GHz Cortex-A76 4 × 2.0 GHz Cortex-A55) plus GPU Mali-G77 MP11. Together with fabrication of 7nm, in performance, there are no problems with the Galaxy S20 Ultra Exynos variant. Well don't let it, remember this is a flagship. Everything feels soft and lightning, coupled with a large refresh rate that makes moving applications feel fun. Using games is also very easy, a combination of fast performance plus a responsive screen makes the S20 Ultra suitable for gaming.

The RAM is very relieved, with a 12GB capacity. What is very unfortunate is the decision of Samsung Indonesia to launch this smartphone with 128GB of internal memory variant. With 108MP resolution images, 8K video and fashion single take, it's easy to spend a small category of memory for the flagship class. There is indeed a microSD up to 1TB support, but the speed of the external card cannot resemble UFS 3.0 on the internal S20 Ultra.

As well as a little bonus note, this smartphone is relatively easy to feel warm on the back of the body, especially the middle and top next to the camera material. Although solely used for access to social media, the warmth is quite noticeable especially if without using a case, and rather close to the heat when used like mobile wifi.

Battery

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has a 5,000 mAh battery capacity, the most in the history of Samsung's flagship phones. It's normal, this smartphone is designed with 5G network expertise, a very large screen, plus abundant camera features which, if used throughout, can use up a lot of energy. For me, this smartphone is economical, although it can't be up to 2 days of use.

As a note, I always use a fashion refresh rate of 120Hz with active AOD. For intensive use in my style, the Galaxy S20 Ultra can be lit all day with a screen-on time near 6 hours. When it's too late, there are still some decent batteries left until the next morning. Well, the charging doesn't take long. Samsung includes a 25 watt charger in the sales package, but the Galaxy S20 Ultra supports chargers up to 45 watts. Through the GaN charger that I have, charging S20 Ultra from 5% to full with the lights on only takes one hour.

Galaxy S20 Ultra also supports wireless charging up to 15 watts. Need? What is the energy of TWS earphones or smartwatch when the situation suddenly? You can use the Wireless PowerShare feature. Turn on this feature, turn to face the bottom, and all you have to do is place the knick-knack feature on the back cover.
